In life there is no such thing as a free lunch and the same applies to that free security system. Sure, you may have to pay little or nothing up front for your security system, but you will over the next three or so years after signing that contract.

The Alarm Monitoring Company doesn’t get the equipment they put in your premise for free and nor is the labor of the salesman or the installer. They have the same over head as any other business, and therefore have to make profit.

That is why you have to sign a contract for that free alarm system, sometimes up to five years in length. The reason being so they can get the actual cost of the alarm system, overhead and profit out of you. They then plan on keeping you as a customer for at least another three years or more as the industry average for a alarm customer is seven years.

The big alarm companies charge anywhere from $33 to $52 per month for 24 hour monitoring of your alarm system. This can add up to anywhere from approximately $1200 to $1500 or more in just a 3 year period. That’s alot of money to shell out every month, and will only continue to grow over the many years to come.

Upon signing this long term contract, alot of customers don’t know to take into account this facts:

1. Ownership: Most likely you don’t “own” that free system alarm system. It’s leased and owned by the alarm company.

2. Removal or Disabling: The alarm company very likely has the right to repossess and remove equipment or disable it if you terminate your contract.

3.Renewal Clause. Every monitoring agreement has a paragraph stating that….this Agreement shall automatically renew itself for the same period at the current rate uless eighter party shall notify the other in writing of its intentio to terminate no less than 30 days prioor to the experiation of the origianl term or any renewal period thereof. So if you signed up for three or five years the contract will renew again every 3 or 5 years, unless you take action in time.

4.Fee Increase: Here’s another hidden goodie that most people don’t know about: Monitoring charges shall be reviewed semi-annually and adjustments may be made, upon the gibing of thirty (30) days written notice.

5.You Will Be Expected to make payments as long as the contract is in force, even if you move or go out of business. The Big Companies as still going to demand their payments even you can’t use the system for the above reasons.

Those fees are high for the reason of paying for that free alarm system over the three or five year, but after that inital contract period the rates don’t come down but possibly even go up. Do you really want to pay those high payments even after the system is long  paid for?

These are all good reasons to not continue with the big companies beyond the inital term, or at all.
